Turkey, as  having the 75% of world production, is the leader in the production and export of hazelnuts. Italy, Spain, USA, Azerbaijan and Georgia are the other major hazelnut producer countries.

World Hazelnut Planting Fields

An increase in hazelnut planting fields can be seen when the world hazelnut planting fields are examined. Hazelnut cultivation areas have been exceeded 800,000 ha area in recent years. Especially Turkey, Italy, USA and Spain have extensive hazelnut agriculture.

Turkey Hazelnut Production

In Turkey, according to statistics from Ministry of Agriculture hazelnut production areas are shown as 639bin hectares. Hazelnut production in Turkey in the Black Sea region extends from the east of the Georgia border to Istanbul. In our country, hazelnut farming regions are divided into 3 groups:

1. Standard Region

• Covers Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, Rize and Artvin provinces,
• Lower efficiency and higher fluctuations of production,
• Production parcels are smaller,
  
• Land has more slope, and there is less soil thickness,
• Older hazenut gardens,
• Covers 60% of production in Turkey.

2. Standard Region

• From Samsun to Kocaeli, covers Sinop, Kastamonu, Zonguldak, Bolu, Düzce, Sakarya provinces,
• Bigger and efficient parcels,
• Young and regular gardens,
• Covers 40% of production in Turkey.

3. Çerezlik Region

• It is the production in many provinces except the 2 Standard Region,
• Low quality hazelnut,
• Consumed in and around the production area,
• Not added to estimated harvests.

World Hazelnut Export and Consumption

Turkey is the world leader in hazelnut exports. Other manufacturerssuch as Italy and Spain use a significant part of their production in their own internal consumption, while US and other countries export to countries like EU, Russia, and China.

Hazelnut has a different and a special place in Turkish agriculture because it is mostly an export product. 90% of hazelnut production is exported in Turkey. In our country's overall exports, while there is 12% of agricultural product, hazelnuts alone has a share of 15%.
