January

This month, the female flowers, in other words carnations will begin to show themselves in hazelnut branches. These female flowers with their red, burgundy and pink colored extensions will become the future hazelnuts.

If plentiful product is desired, then these carnations should be healthy and they shoudl be fertilized without the effects of cold. In this regard, the measures should be taken for the winter or late spring freezes in this month.

Because of this, this flammable bush and other combustible material in the garden should be collected and put aside according to the dominant wind direction until the end of March. The hazelnut gardens can be protected from freezing by burning these bush wit flammable materials such as gas oil.

Again this month, the struggle with Apple scale is done before the buds burst.

Furthermore, mixed and dry branches might be burned in order to fight the harmful Ambrosia Beetle, which is mostly seen in sandy soil. This process is held in the following months too.

February

Female hazelnut flower - so called carnations - are blossomed. Male flowers has begun to spread their flower dust.

Hazlenut gardens are seen like a yellow weil when it is not rainy but mildly windy. This shows that yellow colored flower dusts have begun to fly with the wind to the carnations, and fertilizatin will begin soon.

The amount of the yield depends on the weather, the amount of the flower dust, fertilization, and its quality.

To get good products and plenty of it, the carnations must be well-fed. About 25-30 kg farm fertilizer should be given around 'ocak', below the branches.

Burning the cones is very beneficial to eliminate the harmful big bud mite and twig borer.

A good fertilization means more product and more earnings.

We should not forget that if the farm fertilizer is not burned, then our garden can't have all the benefits of the fertilizer.

March

March is the time when both the air and the soil heat up, in other words, when all the living things start to move.

The nutrients, fertilizer, should be given to soil. Especially, half of the recommended amount of fertilizer should be given to nitrogenous soils in this month. Missing or excess fertilization will be avoided by doing a soil analysis before fertilizing.

In hot weathers, the struggle with hazelnut pests start from March. Before the larvas open the gallery, struggle with Hazelnut leaf driller begins from the beginning of this month.

In this month, some measures should be taken for the damage in the gardens because of the frosts. In the meantime, sorting the damaged branches and stools still continues.

April

Hazelnut branches and gardens begin to become all green.

Generally, this is the month when the struggle is doen by the Hazelnut Cone Mite in the hazelnut gardens. When the insectside is repeated after 15 days, the result will be better. No animals should enter the gardens for 30 days after the insectiside.

In gardens where there is the Hazelnut Green Skunks, the applicationn of medicine is done in the second half of April.

In the early hours of the morning, 10 'ocak' should be shaked, and if at least 1 wintered plant falls, medicine should be applied 8-10 litres for decare.

If the Nitrogenous Fertilization is done, it may also be used this month.

Agricultural struggle will be successful, if the drug for the pests is effective, and if it is applied in recommended doses.

May

In this month, as, all living things wake up from thier winter sleeps, and the hazelnut pests begin to harm the plants. In this regard, the struggle should be done carefully in this month.

Although there are many different medicines for Hazelnut skunks, the medicine should be mixed with water not to harm the birds and the enviroment. No animals should be permitted to enter in the garden.

At the end of this month, the second half of the recommended fertilizer should be applied in the same way with the first half.

In the hazelnut gardens, leaf fertilizers should be applied between March and July between 15-20 days, and 2-3 times.

The animals should not encroach to the gardens within the specified times, and the fuits from the garden should not be eaten without washing.

June

The manufacturer can predict how much will their plants will grow in that year, and he calculates this earnings by looking to the garden.

Foreign plant medicine is applied against the foreign herbs like nettle and blackberry towards the end of this month.

If the stools in hazelnut 'ocak's was not cleaned in autumn, they can be cleaned in this month.

The strugge wtih the 1st period larvas of Lecanium scale provide good results.

All leaves, branches, and stools should be completely insectized to be successful.

In this month, the struggle with the harmful ambrosia beetle is also done. In the gardens consisting of this type of pest, the insectiside is applied in the second half of june, and after 15-20 days, a second insectiside should be applied.

July

It is the month when the hazelnut manufacturer can not take his eyes off the branches, that is because in this month, hazelnut kernels fill the inside of fruits, and shells become very crusty.

Drought can be seen in the times of insufficient rain falls, but if the gardens are watered, the gardens won't be affected by these adverse conditions.

Now, the time for collecting the hazelnuts is at hand. Pre-ceaning of the gardens, repairing the blending equipments, and preparing the stackyard should be done in this month.

If the nympha density is high for Hazelnut skunks, insectiside can be applied.  With each of the drugs mentioned in april is mixed with 50 litres per decare and used for the insectiside.

For the purpose of using appropriate and adequate fertilizer for the future, the leaf exampleshould be taken in the second half of this month.  Soil samples can be taken any time before giving the fertilizer.

Before fertilization, soil or leaf analysis should be done, and the proper fertilizer should be used according to type and needs.

Thus, the fertilizer will not go to waste, and the structure of soil will not be ruined.

August

The hazelnut harvest is done in this joyfull mont.

It is the time when the manufacturer sees the resuls of his hard-work. However, in order to get the full earning of his annual effort, he should pay attention to the hazelnuts whether they have come to the full harvest maturity.

In order to protect the quality of hazelnuts, and to have a contribution to the economy, the manufacturer should comply the conditions in blending and storing the harvested hazelnuts.

September

In some region, where the blending time has delayed, products should be protected from the autumn rains.

Necessary measures should be taken for the hazelnuts, which haven't dry early or stored under nylon cloths, to prevent any damages.

After the harvest of hazelnuts, the insectiside for the twig borer should also be applied.

October

Hazelnuts are already collected, blended, and the manufacturer has already taken his products to the market and has earned some.

It is time to improve, or continue next year's product. Because, October and November are the months to serve the next year's products.

So, the importance should be given to pruning. First, the dried, broken branched, and even the'ocak's should be removed to open up space for the new, young suckers. In the meantime, the unneccesary suckers should also be removed.

On the other hand,October-November months are the times to give phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to the soil. The phosphorus fertilizer shoul be spreaded around 'ocak's, under the branches in 20-30 holes, which have 10-15cm depth.

Also, the insectiside fo the May beetle larvae is applied in September-October months.

November

Shelling will continue in this month, when weather is appropriate. When the winter fertilizer is late, the work is completed again in this month.

The soil should be between 5-7 Ph to develop good and plentiful crop of hazelnuts. This month, as a result of soil and leaf analysis, recommended amount of lime is mixed into the soil.

The fertilizer and the recommended lime should not be given at the same time.

The struggle with apple scale can also be done in this month as in May. On the other hand, when the dry branches are collected, ambrosia beetle would be eliminated.

In the regions, where there is abundant rain in winter, farm fertlizer can be given from this month until May. It should be noted that the best fertilizer is the farm fertilizer that has almost every kinds of nutrients necessary for almost every kind of soil.

The fertilizer should not be spreaded to soil and left that way.

December

It is the month when the hazelnut manufacturer have the least work.

The buds of carnations are bloated and ready to pop, and some of their red ends are seen.

If the manufacturer didn't find the time, he adds the lime according to the soil and leaf analysis, and repairs their fence and their ditch in the appropriate weather conditions.
